.Wash your hands thoroughly before starting a self-acupuncture session.
.Ensure you have a clean area in which to place your needle packaging and cotton wool, e.g. clean dinner plate, and that your sharps bin is within reaching distance.
.Never needle through broken, infected or swollen skin, or through clothing.
.Ensure that the body parts you will needle are also clean and free from any dirt (e.g. mud, paint) and away from clothing that might fall onto the needle.
.Only use in-date, single use, sterilised needles that are made specifically for the purposes of acupuncture, have a needle length of 13mm and a gauge/thickness of 0.18 or 0.20mm.
.Check that you are not allergic or react to any of the components within the acupuncture needles (e.g. silicone, nickel). If in doubt, check with the needle supplier.
.Only use needles that have been removed from intact, sealed packaging just prior to use.
.Do not needle yourself if you have an uncontrolled blood clotting disorder and are at risk from bleeding, or are severely immune comprised. If in doubt check with your doctor.
.Do not needle any part of your body where the local lymph nodes have been removed, e.g. the arm following breast cancer treatment and surgical removal of the local lymph nodes. If in doubt, check with your doctor.
.Only ever needle yourself when it is safe to do so – e.g. when you are somewhere calm, safe, won’t be interrupted and are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
.Only handle the needle via the top part of the guide tube and needle handle. Never touch the needle tip or shaft of the needle before or during insertion.
.Upon removing the needles always place each needle immediately and directly into your sharps bin before removing the next needle. Never re-insert an acupuncture needle, or use a needle that has been dropped – always use a fresh one each and every time.
.Follow the rules where you live with regards to the correct and safe disposal of your sharps bin once full or no longer required. Don't forget to have fun!
